Weighted Blankets Reduced Anxiety in Children During Dental Treatment

A randomized crossover study published in 2026 investigated whether weighted blankets could reduce dental anxiety in children with mild intellectual disabilities.

The study included 42 children between the ages of 6 and 14. The children underwent dental treatment both with and without a weighted blanket, which allowed the researchers to compare the children’s reactions under the different conditions.

When the children used weighted blankets, their anxiety decreased significantly. At the same time, the researchers observed positive changes in several physiological stress markers. Heart rate and blood pressure decreased, while oxygen saturation increased.

The results were similar in both groups when the weighted blanket was introduced. The researchers concluded that weighted blankets may be a safe and non-pharmacological alternative for reducing dental anxiety in children with mild intellectual disabilities.
