Weighted blankets reduced anxiety and agitation in people with dementia

A randomized controlled trial examined the use of weighted blankets among people with dementia who experienced anxiety and agitation in acute care settings.

The results showed that the use of weighted blankets reduced the level of agitation. The researchers also observed a decrease in both heart rate and respiratory rate, as well as a reduced need for pharmacological and other interventions to manage patients’ anxiety.

The weighted blankets were well tolerated by the majority of participants. Seventy percent used the blanket throughout the entire planned intervention period. The healthcare staff assessed the use as appropriate and acceptable, and 92.9 percent considered it feasible in the healthcare setting.

The researchers concluded that weighted blankets can be used safely in the acute care setting studied and that the results show positive effects on agitation and the need for medication in people with dementia.
