Research: Children’s Experiences with Using Weighted Blankets

An interview study was conducted at Halmstad University to investigate how children with ADHD and sleep problems experience the use of weighted blankets as part of a sleep intervention. A total of 26 individual interviews were conducted with children aged 6–15. The children reported that using a weighted blanket required adjustments based on their individual needs, helped them manage their emotions, changed their sleep habits, and facilitated a functional daily life. These findings contribute to a better understanding of weighted blankets as a sleep intervention from the children’s perspective, particularly for the target group of children with ADHD.

The conclusion is that, based on children’s experiences, the use of weighted blankets can help them manage their emotions, sleep problems, and daily life. Weighted blankets can thus serve as a non-pharmacological treatment that helps children with ADHD manage their sleep difficulties and the associated challenges of daily life.
